First Skate on the Backyard Rink

As a first try the rink is not too bad. But we’re having trouble getting water to stay in one end. Yes, the ground is not even, but I think there might be a hole in the tarp too. Yech. So the ice is pretty thin at one end, but the kdis had fun anyway!

More Like Spring…

We’ve been having a very strange “winter” this year and so far it feels more like spring. We took a lovely walk through Carburn Park today and stopped for awhile to play at the playground.

We got together with my sister and her family over the holidays and we took the kids up to Jack Seaton Park to blow off some energy. Andrew and Kelly had a great time at the playground and chased each other up and down the slides and played together on the swing and the climbers. Scootering at Carburn Park

Andrew got a new scooter for Christmas. Since we don’t have very much snow this winter we decided that it would be fun to go give it a try at Carburn. Melanie brought hers too and they both made it all the way around the paved path in the park. Andrew looked like he was working pretty hard at points, but he got better and better as we went.

Louise and the kids wanted to try out their new snowshoes so we went for a walk at Carburn Park. We don’t have lots of snow, but there was just enough to see how well they worked. Although Melanie wasn’t totally hooked, Andrew loved it. We’ll try to get into the mountains for a real test soon.

Concert Day

We had Christmas concerts at both Andrew’s daycare and at Melanie’s school on Wednesday. Well at the School they actually call it the “Winter Concert” instead of a Christmas concert, but we all know that they’re doing it right before Christmas holidays and therefore it’s really the Christmas concert, no matter what religion anyone believes in. But that’s just my rant for the day!

Both of the concerts were great and both Andrew and Melanie were very involved. Andrew’s class actually took their show on the road yesterday and performed for “The Grandparents” at a local Seniors home. Apparently some of the residents didn’t stop talking about the show all day! Andrew was loud and bouncy and got rave reviews for his performance.

Melanie also had a central role and got to play the bongo drums during her performance. It looked like lots of fun…

For Melanie’s birthday she had her first sleepover party. We spent most of the day cleaning up and preparing, but we did take a few minutes during the day to open presents and have some fun.

Melanie had a day off on Friday so I tried to spend as much time with both of the kids as I could. It was nice to take a break. We spent a good chunk of the afternoon baking ‘Sean’s Favorite Cookies’. Yes, that is the official name of the recipe!

The pictures below (and my effort in making them) really don’t do these cookies any justice. When Louise makes them they are fantastic. When the kids and I make them, they’re just OK. But it was still a fun thing to do on a rainy afternoon.

Carburn Park in the Fall, No Training Wheels Required

I took the kids for a trip to Carburn Park to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather (29 °C in calgary at the end of September) and the beautiful golden yellow leaves. The fall colors are always spectactular at Carburn Park and it’s one of my favorite places in Calgary to go to enjoy it! Although the main reason for the trip was to do some location scouting for my upcoming fall portrait season, it was also a great chance to get Andrew out on his bike for a real bike ride with no training wheels. He’s been getting around in the alley just fine, but this was his first ride out in public without somebody following closely to hold him up, catch him, or even to help him get started. It was a great ride on a beautiful day!

Camping in the Elbow Valley in Kananaskis

We camped with some friends at the Little Elbow Equestrian Campground in the Elbow Valley. It was a fantastic weekend with plenty of activity, and some relaxation and great food too. Highlights included hiking the Nihahi Ridge Trail, visiting Forget-Me-Not Pond, and barbecuing some great steaks over an open fire.
