Andrew with Daddy… and an Update
I guess I haven’t given and update for a couple days, so here is the latest in his saga…
Andrew has been very strong and happy for a couple of days now. He has been nursing very well and eating regularly. We had a bit of a concern a couple of days ago about how often he was “voiding” his bladder, however that seems to have cleared up by itself and a subsequent ultrasound confirmed that all of his organs are there and working normally (although it really didn’t make him happy to have it done).
He is still in the special care nursery at Rockyview General Hospital because he is on IV antibiotics. We had been hopeful that he would be able to go home tomorrow, but the doctors just did their rounds and decide that he should stay on antibiotics for a full 7 days instead of just 5. This is mostly due to the sky-high results from his C-RP test a couple of days ago. The repeat test yesterday was significantly lower, but the doc said that she had never seen a higher test than his first one, so she wanted to be cautious.
Because he is doing so well now we know that they are just being conservative (overly so??), but I guess it won’t hurt him. We were looking forward to getting all the wires and tubes off, not to mention being able to take him home, so we are pretty dissapointed right now…
Don’t get me wrong, the staff here have been excellent, and we know that they just want the best for Andrew! It is amazing to watch the nurses in particular doing their jobs. They all seem to absolutely love what they are doing. They have infinite patience and they are very warm, gentle, and helpful. The hospital is also really quite nice and I’m sure there are many worse places that we could be. But we really wanted to take him home tomorrow!
One other issue that may come to bear is the IV site. You have probably noticed from the pictures that it is currently in his head. It was originally in his arm, but when it had to be changed they were not able to get another one to stay in his arm. In fact it had to be changed again yesterday and they had to try many many times before it would stay. They ended up using a “butterfly” needle which I gather is a little bit more dangerous than a normal IV, and we have to be very careful with it. During rounds they were discussing what they would do if (when) it has to be changed again, and I think they pretty much decided that an intramuscular injection may be necessary instead.
So that’s about all for now. We think that Saturday is now the day that he will come home. The doctor actually mentioned Friday, but I think that would only be 6 days on antibiotics, not 7. We’ll just have to wait and see I guess.
