Christmas Eve
We were lucky enough to be able to stay home for Christmas this year! Grandma and Opa Knobel and Auntie Carolyn flew in from Ottawa to join us for the holidays.
Christmas eve was quite traditional (stockings, milk and cookies for Santa, etc,), including some new and old traditions. The new part had Louise and I going to the local community center to donate blood, which we plan to repeat annually at Christmas. The old part mainly invloved Worstebroodjes!
A Knobel Christmas just wouldn’t be right without Worstebroodjes! Opa and Carolyn make these Dutch treats every year. This is the first time I’ve ever seen them made, and it’s quite a sight! Probably the easiest way to describe them for those that have never had them would be to call them Pigs in a Blanket, or maybe just Sausage Rolls, but they really aren’t either of those things. Or at least not like any of those that I’ve had before…
I’ve linked to a recipe for Worstebrodjes, but Opa was apalled when he heard that it called for frozen bread dough! The filling in this recipe is very similar to Opa’s family recipe, but he makes his own dough as well. His father was a bona fide Dutch Baker, so I believe that his recipe is as authentic as they come!
