Vacation in Jamaica — Day 2
Our second day in Jamaica (really our first full day) was much more relaxing than the first, yet still busy… We started the day with a slow breakfast at the poolside restaurant. When we were finished we mosied down the beach to check out the nursery, the kid’s camp, and the dive shop. They were all at the same end of the beach, so it only made sense to check them all out at the same time.
We hadn’t really intend to leave the kids at camp, but we discovered that we had to do a “check out dive” in the pool before we could go Scuba diving, and that there would be an instructor in the pool at 10:00, so we decided to get that out of the way so we could go out on the boat the following day. In hindsight this turned out to be a very good decision since the instructor was only available a couple of days each week.
Melanie and her friends at the kid’s camp actually ended up swimming in the same pool we were diving in and we were able to watch her and see that she was going to have a great time while at camp. This made it a lot easier to drop her off each morning when we were going diving (even though she often told us that she didn’t want to go because she wanted to hang out with us instead)!!
We had lunch by the beach and relaxed for awhile before Louise and Andrew need to go back to the room for a nap. Melanie and I headed back down the beach to the dive shop (actually the “watersports” shop) so that we could go out for a tour of the coral reefs on the glass-bottomed boat. On the way there it started to rain a little bit and Melanie looked up at me and said, “Daddy, why does it feel like something wet is falling on my head?” When pointed out to her that it was starting to rain, she looked up in shock and said, “I never even thought it could rain at the beach!” Although it rained for a couple of hours in the afternoon, it was still very warm we hung out at the beach anyway. The rest of the afternoon passed pretty quickly and we got to enjoy another beautiful sunset before having a nice dinner in one of the restaurants.
One fun story is that we had actually changed rooms so that we could be on the ground floor. Our original room was on the third floor (imagine having a baby with a stroller on the third floor with no elevator…), so we immediately asked for something on the ground. They moved our stuff to the new room in the afternoon, but didn’t move the crib that we had fought so hard to get the previous evening. Before we went for dinner Louise had a quiet word with the duty manager that had helped us the previous night. After she told him that we needed another crib, he first asked (in a rather strained voice), “you changed rooms??”, before saying (much more firmly), “There will be a crib in your room before you’re done your dinner!” And there was!
We took dessert and a bottle of wine back to our room to enjoy on the patio after the kids went to bed. Day 2 was definitely better than day 1, and things were still looking up!
