Yellowstone Vacation — Hayden Valley and Old Faithful

This is another really long post, so feel free to jump straight to the bottom to see the photos. But don't forget to come back later to read the story! For our second day in Yellowstone we decided to get up early and hit the highway right away instead of cooking breakfast at the campsite. There is a gas station adjacent to the Canyon campground so we went there for fuel: gas, coffee, tea, milk, and cinnamon buns. We wanted to be on the road in the early hours of the morning in order to have the best chance at seeing big game (and of course for … Continue Reading ››

Yellowstone Vacation — Calgary to Yellowstone

I've wanted to visit Yellowstone National Park for years (as long as I can remember really) and Louise and I have often talked about going there. Every time it came up we ended up deciding that it was a little bit too far away and too ambitious a trip. But when we had some unplanned vacation time to use up this summer, and when Louise kept telling me that she wanted to do more camping this year, the conversations kept returning to Yellowstone. We finally decided to just do it. Uncharacteristically for us, we made the decision little more than a week in advance, … Continue Reading ››

Late Summer Vacation

We were fortunate to be able to take a summer vacation in late August this year and we took the opportunity to take a drive through Western Canada to see my sister Heidi and her family in 100 Mile House, BC. Yes, it's actually called that, and it was named because it was located 100 Miles from Lillooet, BC, which was Mile 0 of the Cariboo Wagon Road.  That's even funnier since Lillooet is at least 100 Miles from Nowhere!!! It was a pretty relaxing trip and Melanie and Andrew got to hang out with their cousin Hannah and her brand new baby … Continue Reading ››

Vacation in Jamaica — Day 7

Our last day of diving was very nice. In fact the early dive was one of the best dives we did all week. After Louise had aborted a previous dive she had spent some time on the boat talking with Damian (one of the divemasters) about his favorite dives... She was even able to convince him to take us to one of his favorite dive sites. It was called the Throne Room, named after a large crack in the reef that opened into a small cavern below. There was plenty of room to enter the cavern through the crack, and then leave through the wall on … Continue Reading ››

Vacation in Jamaica — Day 6

The highlight of this day was definitely in the water. For me at least. This story actually started on day 5, but I forgot to write about it... Louise had been having trouble clearing her ears over the previous few dives and even had to abort the first dive on Day 4. Although that was sad, she was lucky enough to see a small pod of dolphins while on the boat (2 adults and a baby). She almost had to abort again on Day 4, but after a couple of attempts (and some good advice from one of the divemasters) she finally made it down! We … Continue Reading ››
