Camping at Waterton – Day 1

We went camping at Waterton Lakes National Park for the Canada Day long weekend. We had never been there before but we went with Rich and Patti (and Keiran and Brenna) who had, and so we had some help figuring out where to go. They suggested a very nice campground and they had a list of kid friendly hikes that we could all do. Although the park is in the Rockies, the terrain is surprisingly different than we see in the Mountain Parks closer to Calgary. The wildflowers were in full bloom for our visit and so it was a great time of year to be there! The one … Continue Reading ››

Pelican on the Bow River

We had our first Pelican sighting of the year today. These American White Pelicans arrive in Calgary in late April, hang out on the Bow River all summer, and then take off to Florida before it gets too cold... Sounds like a good plan to me! It was a pretty ugly day today with plenty of snow and rain, but we both had the day off and took advantage of it anyway. We went for a really nice walk along the river and saw plenty of birds including ducks, geese, and a Hawk soaring high above.

There is a permanent link to a slideshow … Continue Reading ››

I've been wanting to get both of these shots for quite awhile but the timing is difficult. The days are so short here in winter and then so long in the summer that it seems like I'm never in the right place at the right time. Everything just fell into place today though...

Zoo Photography 101

For my birthday Louise signed me up for a photography course at the Calgary Zoo. It was one session in the classroom, followed by a morning at the Zoo. I’m not sure I learned all that much, but I had lots of fun at the zoo and I have to present some photo’s at a critique session later this week. Hopefully I will get some valuable feedback from the instructor, and I should be able to pick up some good stuff from the feedback for the other students too. It was quite a thing to be in a group of 15 people heavily loaded with cameras, lenses, tripods, and lots of … Continue Reading ››
